Facts: Extensively grown in the Middle East, the date is the fruit of the date palm. Dates are sweet and rich with a chewy, sticky texture.
Storage: keep really well – for at least a few months in a cool, dark cupboard. They also freeze very well.
Preparation and cooking: use as a sweet snack, or chop them up and use them as a cereal topping in place of sugar or honey. Chopped they can also be used cakes, biscuits and desserts. Delicious served with cheese, stuffed with a whole almond and rolled in icing sugar as an after dinner treat. North African cuisine use dates in tagines and sweet couscous dishes.
