Facts: Basil, also known as St. Josephs wort or sweet basil, is one of the most popular herbs today. It has tender, light green, large leaves and is a low growing herb. In Greek, the word "basil" means king, as it is believed to have grown in the area where the Holy Cross was found. It has a robust flavour and taste, and can be used in many dishes.
Storage: Basil needs to be used straight away if possible, but will keep for a very short time in the fridge or can be frozen.
Preparation and cooking: Rinse before use. Remove the leaves from the stem, then tear or chop as required. Basil is great with tomato based dishes, and can be used to make pesto etc..
